Pegs to be worn as a symbol of abuse
TEAR Fund is calling on New Zealanders to start wearing clothes pegs to show outrage at child abuse.
It follows the death of three-year-old Rotorua girl Nia Glassie who died after being subjected to brutal physical abuse. It has been alleged she was hung from a clothes line and put in a tumble drier - hence the use of a clothes peg.
TEAR Fund Director Steve Tollestrup says the symbol of a clothes peg confronts us all with the national shame of child abuse and wearing a peg will provoke a reaction and get people talking about the issue.
Tollestrup says people involved in the campaign will be carrying clothes pegs in their pockets to pass on to others.
He says it is about time people confront the brutal truth of just how bad child abuse is in this country.
The campaign runs until September 21.
